Risk on Trial: Challenging Risk Management’s Most Widely Held Beliefs

Risk management is full of beliefs that have become standard practice. They shape decisions, influence accountability and appear in risk conversations every day. But familiar doesn’t always mean right.

In Risk on Trial, Riskonnect and RMIA put five of those beliefs in the dock. A jury of senior practitioners debates each one live, drawing on real-world experience across enterprise risk, cyber and technology risk, and major infrastructure delivery.

Before you hear the jury speak, you’ll see how the audience votes. Then catch the debate in action. The jury panel will disagree. They will challenge each other. And for each charge, they’ll deliver one verdict, Guilty, the belief still stands, or Not Guilty, the belief is no longer stands.

The five charges:

Charge 1: AI will do more to harm risk management practices than help.
Charge 2: The most dangerous person in a risk conversation is the one who is certain.
Charge 3: Operational risk is a management problem, not a governance one.
Charge 4: Risk heat maps are a flawed tool and should not be used for risk assessment.
Charge 5: Opportunity risk is not a risk, it is an action to be taken.

Whether you agree with those verdicts or not, the debate will change how you think about at least one belief shaping your organisation right now

In this session you will hear:

  • Why certainty in decision-making is not the same as certainty about outcomes — and why the difference matters
  • Why persistent operational risk often cannot be fixed with more controls and where the real answer usually sits
  • Why the value of a heat map is rarely in the picture and why the disagreements it triggers are often the most useful thing it produces
  • Why opportunity risk belongs alongside threats in your framework and how it is already changing how major infrastructure teams manage budgets
  • Where AI is already outperforming humans in risk tasks and the one condition that has to be in place first
  • Why the jury went against the audience on certainty and how the debate shifted opinion live on operational risk
  • What the jury would put on trial next including whether risk appetite statements are ever actually acted on
